Senator Passes bill to keep 16 daycare centers open
Providing child care facilities for 772 children
 
(Albany, New York) Today- Governor Paterson signed landmark legislation that means all day care centers in New York City have to give 12 months notice prior to closing.  “This is a victory for working families,” said Senator Parker (D-21). “There are thousands of families in New York City who are dependent on city run daycare centers and this will give them the time needed to find a new facility if their day care provider faces closure.”
 
The move came after New York City announced last February it planned to close 16 day care centers at the end of the school year. These closures would have resulted in 772 children, most of whom are minorities needing to find alternative childcare arrangements, by the end of the school year. “I went to Albany to find solutions to the problems faced by the people in my community,: said the Brooklyn lawmaker. “This is just one small step to make sure parents and guardians are given the resources they need to make informed choices for their families” The bill will take effect in immediately and give families who have received closure notices and additional six months to find a new childcare arrangements.
